At first glance, Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club building a purpose-built stadium for their women’s team might feel unnecessary since they already have the Amex stadium – a modern 30,000-seat stadium, with transport links, infrastructure, hospitality and existing operations.
So why build another one right next door? Well, as we’ll see – it’s because they paid attention to attendance numbers, commercial projections, and to the actual makeup of the crowd turning up every week.
The proposed new stadium will reportedly hold around 10,000 fans. Smaller and more intimate by design. Built specifically around the behaviours and needs of the audience it serves.
Most organisations still design from precedent. They inherit a system, a product or a venue and ask: “How do we make this work for more people?”
Far fewer start with the people themselves and ask: “What would we build if we began with you?”
Infrastructure always reflects assumptions
The answer, in Brighton’s case, appears surprisingly practical.
Women’s football crowds tend to skew more family-oriented, more multi-generational, more communal, and more inclusive. This therefore creates entirely different needs from a traditional men’s football environment.
Buggy parking suddenly matters. Accessible circulation space matters. Toilet provision matters – especially when many stadiums were historically designed around overwhelmingly male audiences.
Even small inherited assumptions become visible once you look properly. Urinals. Open shower layouts. Facilities optimised for a different crowd, from a different era, serving a different set of social behaviours.
None of these things are catastrophic failures individually. But together they reveal something bigger: infrastructure always contains assumptions about who belongs there.
That’s why this project feels important beyond football. It’s a reminder that inclusion is rarely solved through messaging alone. Eventually, values become spatial, physical, and operational.
The most interesting decision might be the smaller capacity
The most counterintuitive part of the project may actually be the decision to make the stadium smaller. Conventional sports logic pushes toward scale. Bigger attendance, bigger capacity and bigger spectacle.
But atmosphere doesn’t scale linearly.
A full 10,000-seat stadium often creates more energy, identity and belonging than a half-full 30,000-seat one. Especially in a sport still actively shaping its culture.
Again we can see the difference between designing for the audience you have, not the audience you inherited from somewhere else. It’s a subtle and important shift.
Rather than forcing a growing audience into infrastructure built for another context, Brighton appears to be asking: what environment helps this audience feel most connected?
That’s a very different design philosophy.
What brands should take from this
There’s a wider lesson here for brands, products and organisations.
Sometimes innovation isn’t adding something new.
It’s noticing that the original system was built around assumptions that no longer hold true. Or perhaps were never true for everyone in the first place.
You can usually tell who an organisation was truly designed for by examining:
- Who feels comfortable lingering?
- Who can navigate the space easily?
- Who has to adapt themselves to fit the system?
- Who was considered “normal” during the design process?
The organisations that build stronger loyalty over the next decade likely won’t be the ones with the loudest purpose statements. They’ll be the ones willing to redesign the plumbing.
A final thought
The most valuable audience insights are seldom found in surveys alone.
They show up in behaviour, in friction points, and in the small moments where people quietly adapt themselves to systems that weren’t fully designed with them in mind.
